Coward’s Fare

Time moves on but pain stays where
The night's darkness masks the bare
Rawness of the devil's lair.
Frightened! Fight? Do I dare
Stand up in the headlights' glare
Or lie down beaten? Despair
As ever, the coward's fare.

Time moves on but pain stays where?
Within, without, ever there.
Constant  - almost - and so rare
Freedom  - ha! - never an heir.
Fear, loneliness stand foursquare
Holding weakness; squeezing air.
As ever the coward's fare.
