Yesterday I published “Lost Hope” a poem written in my own special version of bastardised Scots and English. For those who can’t decipher my “language” I post the original poem along with a translation.
Lost Hope
Twa months and mair wi' no' a word
The Herald's sayin' nothin' tae me
Yon poetry prize ah was gonna win
Ah've nae chance noo ah seeAh should ha'e kent ah was oot ma depth
Ah'm nae a meester o' wurds ye ken
Struggle stringin' a sen'ence thegither
Nae wunner, ah'm only tenHuh ah fooled ye there ah did
Ah'm ten an' a wheen more years
There's only yin fool an' ah'm the yin
Ah aye end in burns o' tearsAh wanna be guid, sae very very guid
Sae much ah truly believe
But reality bites me oan ma erse
Nae talent, ah aye'ways grieveAh should gie up my dreamin' thochts
Fur doon an doon ah sink
Ah'm jist an or'nary stupit loon
Aye in trouble when ah think

Lost Hope - Translated
Two months and more with not a word
The Herald is saying nothing to me
That poetry prize I was going to win
I've no chance now I seeI should have known I was out of my depth
I'm not a master of words, you know
Struggle stringing a sentence together
No wonder, I'm only tenHuh! I fooled you there I did
I'm ten and a lot more years
There's only one fool and I'm the one
I always end in floods of tearsI want to be good, so very very good
So much I truly believe
But reality bites me on my bum
No talent I always grieveI should give up my dreaming thoughts
For down and down I sink
I'm just an ordinary stupid fool
Always in trouble when I think

You are good and not in the slightest bit a fool x
It takes a long time for a poet to be recognised. What matters is that you keep writing, Calum. Simply because it helps to put down one's feelings into words. Also keep sending your poems whenever there is a contest. Many great books have been refused a number of times before they were finally accepted. Perseverance pays off.
Thank you for translating your poem. I nearly understood the original. Getting used to the language. All the best.
