If that's the West coast of Scotland sea, as I suspect, then it is definitely cold. It always is. You can be roasting hot, sweating, desperate to cool down... "ah... time for a dip in that lovely cool sea..." ... so you get in to about knee height and "Bloody hell no way is that being allowed to reach my tender bits, it's freezing! I'm out of here"

I use to swim in the north Atlantic off Nova Scotia, but only after July. Still, I suspect it's even colder up near Scotland! I would snorkel out there until my skin started turning blue...
As kids we used to swim in the sea whenever we had the chance. Back then the cold seemed to have less effect on our vital parts!
